Vizio Remote App Not Working? 6 Fixes That Help

Vizio TV not showing a code, not found, or not responding to your phone? Six fixes for SmartCast remote apps, from power mode to the pairing code.

Vizio SmartCast TVs accept a phone as a remote over Wi-Fi, after a one-time 4-digit code. When that doesn't happen, one of these six things is usually the reason.

1. Is the TV fully on?

A SmartCast TV only accepts new remotes while it's on. If the screen is off, turn it on with the buttons on the TV and try again. To let apps wake the TV later, look for the TV's power mode in its settings and choose Quick Start rather than an eco or energy-saving mode.

2. Are the phone and TV on the same Wi-Fi?

The phone must be on the same network as the TV: not a guest network, not a different band your router keeps separate, and with any VPN on the phone turned off.

3. No code on the TV?

The TV may still be busy with another pairing, from another phone or app a moment ago. Wait a minute, then tap the TV in the app again while looking at the screen.

4. Typed the wrong code a few times?

After several wrong codes the TV may refuse new pairings for a while. Wait a few minutes before trying again, and type the code exactly as it appears.

5. Too many phones paired already?

A TV can only remember so many remotes. In the TV's settings, look for the list of paired mobile devices and remove the ones you no longer use.

6. Restart the TV and router

Unplug the TV for a minute, plug it back in, and restart your router if other devices also struggle to find each other.

Is there a Vizio remote app that skips the account?

Yes. A Vizio TV doesn't need an account to accept a phone remote, only the 4-digit code. Remofy is a free Android remote with no sign-in and no subscription. It tells you which of the problems above it ran into, instead of a generic error.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work on older Vizio TVs?

Vizio TVs with SmartCast (roughly 2016 and later) work over Wi-Fi. Older, non-SmartCast models generally only take infrared, so phone apps can't control them.

Why do some buttons not work?

SmartCast doesn't expose every button of the plastic remote over the network, such as the number keys and colored buttons. Power, volume, inputs, navigation and playback work.

Is it free?

Yes, with every button available. Remofy shows ads to stay free.
