onn. TV Remote App: Use Your Phone as the Remote

Lost your onn. remote? onn. TVs and streaming devices run Roku or Google TV, and both work with a free phone remote over Wi-Fi. Here's how.

Walmart's onn. TVs and streaming devices are cheap and popular, and their small remotes are easy to lose. The good news: your phone can take over in a minute, over your home Wi-Fi.

Which remote app works with onn.?

onn. products run one of two systems, and you need an app that speaks that system:

  • onn. Roku TV (most onn. TVs): it runs Roku. The home screen has the Roku menu on the left.
  • onn. Google TV streaming box or stick, and onn. devices with Google TV: the home screen says "For you" at the top.

Remofy is a free Android remote that works with both, with no account and no subscription.

How do I control an onn. Roku TV from my phone?

  1. Connect your phone to the same Wi-Fi network as the TV.
  2. Install Remofy and open it. Your onn. Roku TV shows up in the list after a few seconds.
  3. Tap it. Roku needs no code, so the remote works straight away.

If the TV doesn't respond, one Roku setting is usually the reason: Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Control by mobile apps must be Enabled (not Limited or Disabled). Remofy tells you when a Roku has it switched off, and connects by itself as soon as you turn it on.

To turn the TV on from the app, also turn on Settings > System > Power > Fast TV start on the TV.

How do I control an onn. Google TV device from my phone?

  1. Connect your phone to the same Wi-Fi network as the streaming device.
  2. Open Remofy and tap the onn. device in the list.
  3. The TV shows a 6-character code (it can include the letters A-F). Type it into the app once.

From then on the app reconnects automatically.

What can I do from the phone?

  • Arrows, OK, Back and Home
  • Volume and mute
  • Play, pause, rewind and fast-forward
  • Open apps like Netflix and YouTube
  • Type in search boxes with your phone keyboard, much faster than spelling with arrows

My onn. remote is lost and the TV isn't set up for my phone. What now?

  • onn. Roku TV with "Control by mobile apps" set to Limited or Disabled: you need a remote once to change the setting. A replacement Roku TV remote is cheap, and a universal infrared remote set up for Roku TVs works too.
  • onn. Google TV box with a new phone: the pairing code shows on the TV by itself, so you don't need the old remote.
