TV Remote Online: Can a Website Control Your TV?
Looking for a TV remote website? A web page can't reach your TV, but your phone can. What works for Roku, Samsung, LG, Fire TV, Vizio and Google TV.
You lost the remote, or the batteries died, and you searched for a TV remote you can open in your browser. The short answer: a website can't control your TV. The phone in your hand can, and it takes about a minute to set up.
Below is why web remotes don't work, what does, and the setup for each TV brand.
Can a website control my TV?
No. Smart TVs only take remote commands from devices on your home Wi-Fi, and browsers don't let websites talk to devices on your home network. That rule protects you: otherwise any page you open could reach your TV, your printer or your router.
So a page that calls itself an "online TV remote" either asks you to install something extra, or it simply never reaches the TV.
What works instead of a TV remote website?
A remote app on a phone or tablet that is on the same Wi-Fi as the TV. The app finds the TV on your network and sends the same commands the TV's own remote would.
Remofy is a free Android remote that does this for most smart TVs, with no account and no subscription:
- Connect your phone to the same Wi-Fi network as the TV (not a guest network, and with any VPN off).
- Install Remofy and open it. Your TV shows up in the list after a few seconds.
- Tap your TV and follow the one-time step for your brand (below).
What does each TV brand ask for the first time?
| TV | First-time step |
|---|---|
| Roku and Roku TVs (TCL, Hisense, onn., Sharp) | No code. "Control by mobile apps" must be set to Enabled on the Roku |
| Samsung (Tizen) | Choose Allow on the TV's pop-up |
| LG (webOS) | Type the code shown on the TV |
| Google TV and Android TV (Sony, TCL, Hisense, onn., Chromecast) | Type the 6-character code shown on the TV |
| Fire TV and Firestick | Type the 4-digit code shown on the TV |
| Vizio SmartCast | Type the 4-digit code shown on the TV |
After that, the app remembers the TV and reconnects by itself.
What if I don't want to install anything at all?
There are a few no-download options, each with limits:
- The buttons on the TV. Most TVs have a small power button or joystick on the back or underneath. It covers power, volume and input, not menus.
- Another remote you already have. Many TVs follow a streaming stick's or a soundbar's remote over HDMI-CEC, at least for power and volume.
- The TV maker's own app, if you already have it. Some ask you to sign in before they work.
For full control right now, the phone app is the quickest route.
Frequently asked questions
Does a phone remote work without Wi-Fi?
No. The phone and the TV must be on the same Wi-Fi network. TVs that only accept infrared (older, non-smart TVs) can't be controlled over Wi-Fi at all.
Is Remofy free?
Yes, with every button available. It shows ads to stay free, and there is no subscription.
Do I need an account?
No. Remofy talks to the TV directly over your Wi-Fi, with no sign-in.
